Big birthday bashes are nothing new in the celebrity world – but they do seem to be taking on a life of their own these days.
Take Nick Jonas’ 16th birthday party in September. He and his brothers, Kevin and Joe, rented Dodgers Stadium to the tune of $30,000 for a couple of hours Sept. 16. If you don’t know who the Jonas’ Brothers are, you obviously don’t have a preteen or teenaged girl.
So, what did they do with their 2 1/2 hours all alone in the stadium? They didn’t put on a concert, that’s fore sure. Instead, they played baseball with 15 of their closest friends. That’s right. No one knows what the final score was, but they did score some new sneakers, bats, balls and gloves at the Big 5 Sporting Goods in Beverly Hills before heading to park. This birthday soiree pales in comparison to Miley Cyrus’s birthday in October. The daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley co-stars with dad on Hannah Montana.
Her Sweet 16 was an over the top celebration at Disneyland. The park closed early for a wild night that included a performance by Miley, fireworks and 16 giant inflatable candles around the castle. Five thousand guests attended, paying $250 per ticket to party it up with Hannah, uh, Miley and dad.
Many the rides stayed open especially for the party, including Big Thunder Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean. Partiers could also get a Hannah Montana makeover. Who attends a $250 a head Sweet 16 birthday at Disneyland? American Idol runner- up David Archuleta was there, along with Jennie Garth of 90210 fame. Cindy Crawford, Steve Carrell, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Tyra Banks and Heather Locklear were also spotted.
Want to be like Miley in 2009? While you can’t rent the entire theme park for your birthday, you can come close. Throughout 2009, birthday boys and girls of any age get into the Disneyland or Walt Disney World park of their choice for free. All you need is valid ID that shows your birthday. For the little ones, that would be a birth certificate or passport. For the older set, a driver’s license will do.
So, what did Miley get for her birthday? A Hannah Montana makeover? A new car? The Jonas Brothers? Nope. Her parents gave her a puppy.
Youth Service America also received a wonderful gift for Miley’s birthday. The organization was given a special gift of $1 million on behalf of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, which was part of the proceeds raised through ticket sales to the event.
